Lifejacket Standards Fact Sheet

The new Australian Standard for Personal Flotation Devices - AS 4758 was introduced into recreational boat legislation nationally on 1 July 2010.

1. What does this decision mean for manufacturers and retailers?

Level 100 will be the minimum requirement for offshore use. Please note that Level 100 and Level 150 Lifejackets made to other standards cannot be assumed to be compliant with AS 4758.

The National Marine Safety Committee has agreed that a Lifejacket made to Level 150, which will be similar to the current inflatable Lifejacket Type 1, and suitable for offshore use will be accepted as an alternative to a Level 100.

2. Do retailers need to sell only Lifejackets made to the new standard after 1 July 2010?

No. Lifejackets made to the old standards can be sold after 1 July 2010.
Lifejackets made to the old standards will still be recognised for many years.

If a manufacturer or distributer is not able to supply adequate stocks by the date of legislation, the retailer won't be disadvantaged.

3. What does the new standard cover?

The levels introduced are -

Level 150 - similar to inflatable Lifejacket Type 1 and suitable for offshore use
Level 100 - similar to Lifejacket Type 1 and the minimum requirement for offshore use
Level 50 - similar to Lifejacket Type 2
Level 50 Special Purpose (50S) - to replace Lifejacket Type 3

4. Why do we need a new standard?

Standards Australia carried out a review of the Australian Standard covering Lifejackets and developed a new standard to more closely align with international standards.

5. When the stocks do become available, will everyone need to replace their existing Lifejackets?

No. Lifejackets made to the old standards will still be recognised for many years. A change over date won't be established until after thorough consultation.
